Abstract

Abstract

Using the novel Frankenstein as a visual mentor and metaphor, I explore methods of creating both paintings and video works through a piecemeal procedure like that of Dr. Frankenstein's monster. In this paper, I discuss the limitations and successes of my artistic practice and how the aesthetics of failure, montage, and the art historical movements of Post-minimalism and Casualism informed my work during my course of study. I seek to outline my journey from my early paintings that relied on image-making and my subsequent transformation to abstract sculptural paintings to achieve an aesthetic that is in line with that of science fiction. I also explore the art historical and literary device of camp to align my video work with self-aware horror and science fiction films in my short film To The Second Power.This paper presents a narrative of the changing nature of my practice by means of a diaristic tone and outlines my visual goals.
